Summary. In order to fulfill comparative assessment of research activities of the universities of Belarus and Ukraine a set of bibliometric indices that is different from those that were used to be in practice in these countries for such evaluations had been introduced. A comparative assessment of the research activities of universities of Ukraine and Belarus was fulfilled; the data on the leading universities of both countries is presented. The sensitivity of the one of the indices used in the study to operational changes of the scientific activity and the ability of the other one to average data related to various fields of knowledge are considered as the grounds for the preferable use of the introduced set of indices.
